Can a Virtual World hammer make you cry?

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Right, so here is a link that floated around a few lists I’m on prior to the semester’s start.

Is this Man Cheating on His Wife?

If you don’t feel like reading, I will summarize: Some dude in Second Life gets a Second Wife. The tag line applied to this link was “Well, Virtual Worlds Can Make You Cry,” and I think I’ve finally come to the end of the road with the question of whether or not a videogame can make you cry…in the form of a parable.

If I hit you in the head with a hammer, did the hammer make you cry…or did I. If you and I are visiting a museum and I rip a painting off the wall and hit you in the head with it, did that painting make you cry or did I? If Mr. Hoogestraat is being a douchebag to his wife while in Second Life, did Second Life make her cry…or is he just being a douchebag.
